MASTERING THE BASICS: HOW TO RE-GRIP A GOLF CLUB FOR BEGINNERS
Learn how to re-grip your golf clubs to maintain optimal traction and improve your game.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
- NEW GOLF GRIPS (that's where we come in!)
- Double-sided grip tape
- Grip solvent (or mineral spirits)
- Hook blade
- Grip tape remover (optional)
- Rubber vise clamp
- Cloth or towel
STEPS:
1. REMOVE THE OLD GRIP:
- Secure the club in the vice using a rubber shaft clamp to prevent damage (if available).
- Use a utility knife with a hook blade to carefully cut through the old grip from the bottom to the top.
- Peel off the old grip and discard it.
2. REMOVE THE OLD GRIP TAPE:
- Peel off the old grip tape from the shaft. Use a grip tape remover if necessary.
- Clean the shaft with a cloth or towel to remove any remaining adhesive residue.
3. APPLY NEW GRIP TAPE:
- Measure and cut a piece of double-sided grip tape to match the length of the new grip.
- Peel off one side of the tape and apply it to the shaft, starting from the butt end and wrapping it around the shaft smoothly.
- Remove the backing from the other side of the tape, exposing the adhesive.
4. APPLY GRIP SOLVENT:
- Cover the new grip’s open end with your finger and pour a generous amount of grip solvent into the grip.
- Shake the grip to ensure the solvent coats the inside thoroughly.
- Pour the excess solvent over the tape on the shaft to make it slippery.
5. INSTALL THE NEW GRIP:
- Align the grip with the shaft and slide it over the taped area. The solvent will help it slide on easily.
- Ensure the grip is fully seated on the shaft by pushing it all the way down until the butt end of the shaft fits snugly into the end of the grip.
- Quickly align the grip before the solvent dries. Ensure that any alignment marks on the grip are positioned correctly.
6. CLEAN UP AND LET IT SET:
- Let the club sit for a few hours (ideally overnight) to allow the grip solvent to evaporate and the grip to adhere securely to the shaft.
- Wipe off any excess solvent from the shaft and grip.
